An adult patient who chooses to pursue psychoanalysis is a basically
resilient individual who is motivated to undertake a thoroughgoing
exploration of personality traits, unconscious motivations,
and patterns of relating to others for the purpose of gaining
maximal mastery over emotional problems and impediments to psychic
growth. This is an intensive treatment involving four or five
sessions per week.

Psychoanalysis is the best treatment for a child or adolescent when
*they have complex emotional disturbances
*the problems stem from within
* an individual approach is needed to modify psychological roadblocks
so children can achieve their full potential
*other therapies have failed to produce long-lasting change

The training of the analyst must be comparably intensive and thorough.
Psychoanalytic education is based on a tripartite model with three
complementary learning experiences: a personal analysis, theoretical
and clinical seminars, and supervised psychoanalytic work.
The Training Analysis is a personal therapeutic analysis required
for all candidates, conducted at least four times per week, by a
Training Analyst on the Denver Institute’s Faculty. It should
continue through a substantial period of the candidate’s training
experience. Candidates for child and adolescent training who have
graduated from an accepted adult analytic training, must have completed
or be in the process of undertaking a training analysis. Because
of the nature of child work and the differences from its adult counterpart,
as well as the Institute's belief in a tripartite model of training,
it is strongly advisable that candidates be in analysis during their
child training.
The analysis of patients under supervision is an essential part
of psychoanalytic education. The candidate will generally begin
their first supervised analysis soon after seminars commence and
will start a second supervised case within the next six months.
At least one case is taken from the Psychoanalytic Clinic. Supervision
begins at one hour per week for each case, and may become less frequent.
The minimum frequency of patient sessions is four times per week,
but one case in five times weekly analysis is suggested. Supervision
during the termination phase is expected. Formal written evaluations
are conducted annually.
Adult classes are offered on Fridays (12:00-5:10 PM), Child &
Adolescent specific classes are held on Tuesdays (12:00-2:00 PM).
Child candidates take the Development and Theory sequences on Fridays
(12:00-2:30). See programs for more details.
