Psychoanalytic Treatment Services

The Psychoanalytic Clinic of the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis was started in 1963 to provide psychoanalytic treatment for patients accepted for supervised psychoanalysis. The Clinic functions as a referral service providing evaluations for the community relating to suitability for psychoanalytic treatment. The fee is scaled to the patient's ability to pay. The Clinic also serves to inform and educate health professionals and the community about psychoanalysis. In 1988, the Clinic was expanded to include the evaluation and psychoanalytic treatment of children and adolescents. Although the evaluation of adults is performed free of charge, because of the additional time required to evaluate children, a fee of $100 is customary.

It is beneficial to candidates, the community, and the Institute that each candidate (child & adult) treats at least one patient from the clinic waiting list. Most often this is at a significantly reduced fee. In the unusual event that no appropriate case is available, this requirement is waived. Generally, the clinic has a waiting list and is a resource to candidates wishing to see additional patients in analysis.

People desiring a referral for psychoanalysis are first screened by the Director of the Clinic. This screening is generally brief and takes place over the phone. Suitable applicants are placed on a waiting list to be evaluated at a later date by a candidate under supervision. If the candidate recommends analysis, and the patient/analyst fit is workable, an arrangement will be negotiated to begin analysis. If alternate forms of treatment are indicated, the candidate will make an appropriate referral in consultation with the supervisor

Fees will be arranged between the candidate and patient according to the patient's ability to pay, and in consultation with the supervisor.

For those interested in obtaining an evaluation through the clinic, please contact the administrator of the DIP/DPS, at 303-724-2666.
