Description:

This class will focus on reading James Baldwin's landmark book The Fire Next Time. Discussion of Baldwin's ideas and discussion of our reaction and ideas about race and racism will be divided over 3 sessions. We hope participants will engage in looking inward at reactions to race and racism to develop increased comfort with addressing experience of race in clinical work with patients and to look at the therapist's or analyst's transference and countertransference reactions regarding race and racism. We will discuss trauma and race.

Objectives: (after this class, participants should be able to)

  1. Describe internal reactions, including transference and countertransference, influenced by race.
  2. Discuss racism and traumatization.

Books & Format: Participants will furnish their own books and be expected to read the assigned sections before each meeting.  The format will be discussion by participants in the style of a book group, divided over 3 meetings.   

Dates & Times: Classes will meet from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM for 3 Fridays on:  October 4, 11, and 18, 2019 in Cherry Creek (exact address given upon registration).

Cost:  $90 for Society members and $110 for non-Society members

The course is limited to a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 8 people.  

Deadline to register is September 20th. 

CME Certificates:  In order to receive a CME certificate, the attendee must: pre-register, pay in full, attend sessions in their entirety and complete an evaluation within 14 days after the program.  CME certificates will be sent by email within a month following the event after attendees are cross referenced by registration, payment, sign-in, and completion of the evaluation.  

Cancellation and Certificate Replacement Policy: There will be no refunds after September 13, 2019; any refunds prior to September 13th will be less a $30.00 administration fee.  Please retain your CME certificate for your records.  There will be a $3 charge if the Society office has to resend a certificate.
