COURSE DETAILS

Description:  With improvement in fMRI resolution, we have exciting new information about a primitive brain structure called The Aversion Network or the Anti-Reward network. Dysregulation of this network has been correlated with addiction, chronic pain, complicated grief, PTSD, and depression. The implications regarding two topics dear to my heart, psychoanalysis and addiction, are remarkable. This half-day seminar will discuss current research on the operations of this network, especially with respect to addiction, complex PTSD, and psychoanalysis and offer some suggestions for psychoanalytic interventions based on these findings.

The talk will be divided into four parts. Part I will discuss the neurobiology of the Anti-Reward network and how this relates to psychiatric disorders, especially addiction. Part II surveys a few psychoanalytic concepts considering this model of brain dysregulation. Part III will look at treatment of addiction, taking these new findings into account. This section is subtitled, “Where psychoanalysis, addiction treatment, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and Buddhism meet.” And Part IV examines what psychoanalysis has to offer to people suffering from addiction.

I am looking forward to the kind of lively discussions generated in previous talks with the Denver Psychoanalytic Society, not only with regard to the nature of addiction and psychoanalysis, but to the implications on what it is like to be human and whether we might have more choice about what kind of society we make.

    2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Aversion Network as it applies to addiction, PTSD, chronic pain, complicated grief, and depression.
