Description:

Secrets tell us who we are. When a withheld secret emerges in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, it impacts the patient, clinician, and therapeutic process in unexpected ways. This presentation emphasizes some of those unrecognized and unmetabolized consequences on the mind and body of the therapist and patient. Classic and contemporary psychoanalytic concepts, cognitive studies, neuroscience research, and their practical applications can foster ethical decision making and ultimately foster growth and resilience of the secret keeper.

Learning Objectives:
  1. List four unexpected impacts that a revealed secret may have in an ongoing treatment that affect both clinician and patient.
  2. Demonstrate and use somatic/countertransference reactions as an additional source of knowledge about the impact of secrets.
