About the Event: Recent neurobiological research has improved our understanding of psychotherapeutic techniques that produce long-term changes in our clients. In this seminar, Stephen Finn will illustrate how many of these new discoveries have been integrated into psychotherapeutic theories and techniques focused on memory reconsolidation, for example, within Coherence Theory (B. Ecker and L. Hulley), EMDR (Shapiro), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Ogden), Somatic Experiencing (Levine) and Therapeutic Assessment (Finn). The process of memory reconsolidation allows clinicians to help clients modify and transform painful memories from the past and change their core narratives, sometimes in a short period of time.
Starting from a review of recent research on memory reconsolidation and its neurobiological correlates, Dr. Finn will teach the general phases necessary to identify the emotional learnings connected to our clients’ symptoms and help clients change these core beliefs. A goal is for workshop participants to be able to adopt these phases flexibly within their own clinical work in psychotherapy and psychological assessment. Another goal of the workshop is experiential learning of the techniques of memory reconsolidation through video illustration, small groups, and in-person work. This marks the first time Dr. Finn’s training has been offered in the United States.
At the end of the training, participants will have learned how to:
- Integrate memory reconsolidation into different psychotherapeutic models, including Therapeutic Assessment.
- Establish and maintain a safe context with the client before using the memory reconsolidation techniques, so that the client remains within the window of tolerance.
- Elicit clients’ emotional states in the here-and-now of the session while they are remembering a painful and/or traumatic event.
- Identify the underlying core belief (Pro-symptom Position).
- Help the client assimilate information that conflicts with that belief (Juxtaposition Phase).
- Metaprocess what happened in the session with the client (Verification Phase).
